Getting Off a Wait List
10 12 2009Finding yourself on a univeristy wait list can be frustrating. In case you have been rejected or accepted, at least you know exactly where you stand. But not so with a wait list.
Firstly, be realistic - as many people never get off this list. Many years about third of wait-listed people eventually get accepted. In certain cases, particularly at elite universities, no students get off a list. You need to move forward with back-up colleges.
But not all of hope is lost; you may do several things to make better your opportunites of getting off this wait list:
You should contact the admissions office in order to know why your application was not accepted. Were the test scores low? Were the optional activities weak? Did the univeristy already accept 10 students excelling at playing the tuba? When you are capable to define the reasons your college application did not make this to the pile top, you will be better capable to address this issue.
You need to write to the college to reaffirm the real interest in attending (and when you are not sincerely concerned in attending, you should not put yourself on a wait list to start with). Your letter needs to be specific and polite. You must show that you own good reasons for wishing to attend — what is it about the college, which have made it your best option? What is it that the univeristy provide that you will not find elsewhere? You should send along new and vital info that might make the application stronger.
